Why Choosing the Right Sustainable Packaging Is Harder Than It Looks
For a long time, the sustainable packaging conversation in food delivery has been framed as a simple swap: plastic out, paper in. Zomato's newly launched tool, PackSwitch, makes the case that this framing has been wrong all along, and that the real barrier to adoption was never willingness but information.
The problem PackSwitch is built to solve is a familiar one to anyone who has tried to green a supply chain. Plastic became the default packaging material for restaurants because it is cheap, sturdy, and forgiving of whatever gets packed into it. But a single dish can defeat a single-material solution just as easily as plastic defeated everything else. A biryani box has to survive its own steam without turning the rice mushy. A curry container needs to be spill-proof under motion. A pizza box has to vent heat without letting the crust go soggy. A dessert box has to stay sealed while keeping its presentation intact. Restaurants that tried to do the responsible thing by switching straight to paper often ran into a version of the same failure: oil seeping through an uncoated bag, or steam trapped in a box that was never designed to release it. The lesson, as Zomato's blog post describing the tool puts it, is that "switching to sustainable packaging isn't simply about replacing one material with another. It is about finding what works for your food, your delivery journey and your business."
PackSwitch approaches that problem as a matching exercise rather than a marketing campaign. Restaurants pick a dish, see which materials, among options like bagasse, aluminium, areca leaf, compostable plastic, earthenware, glass, and both kraft and coated paper, are suited to how that food behaves in transit, and then connect directly with one of more than 100 verified suppliers across India. It is a small piece of infrastructure, but it addresses the actual bottleneck: restaurant owners generally were not resistant to sustainable materials, they simply lacked a reliable way to know which material fit which dish and where to reliably source it at scale.
The tool did not appear in isolation. It builds on Zomato's Plastic-Free Future program, running since December 2024, which the company says has recognized more than 10,000 restaurants across over 500 cities for adopting alternatives to plastic on their core menu items. By the end of March 2026, restaurants in that program had collectively delivered more than 100 million orders using what Zomato classifies as low-plastic packaging. Those numbers matter less as a marketing flourish than as evidence that the underlying demand was already there before the tooling caught up to it.
There is also a compliance dimension worth watching. Zomato frames improved packaging choices as reducing restaurants' exposure to materials that may face tightening regulation, a reasonable bet given how quickly extended producer responsibility rules and single-use plastic restrictions are moving across markets. Packaging decisions that once lived entirely in a restaurant owner's cost calculation are increasingly becoming compliance decisions too, and platforms that can shorten the distance between "we should do this" and "here is exactly how" have an obvious advantage in getting adoption to actually happen.
What makes PackSwitch worth watching is not the novelty of sustainable packaging materials themselves, most of which have existed for years, but the acknowledgment that the last-mile problem was never the materials. It was the decision-making layer sitting on top of them. If more of the packaging transition depends on tools like this rather than on new materials science, the pace of change may end up being set less by chemistry and more by how well platforms can turn "sustainable" into "specific."
